Brief overview
Maine, the 23rd state, is composed of small cities and towns. The largest city--Portland--has a population of just 65,000. Other cities include Lewiston, Auburn, and Bangor, but the population of these four cities combined is only about 150,000. That means that seven out of eight Mainers live in smaller towns (mostly along the coast) like Brunswick, Bath, Rockland, and Ellsworth.

Abundant with natural resources, Maine produces 98% of the nation's low-bush blueberries, also the state is one of the world's largest pulp-paper producers. With almost 89% of its area forested, Maine turns out wood products from boats to toothpicks. Maine also leads the world in the production of the familiar flat tins of sardines.

If you are a nature lover, then you have chose a right state, Maine with its scenic seacoast, beaches, lakes, mountains, and resorts has a nature's treasure to explore. There are more than 2,500 lakes and 5,000 streams, plus 26 state parks to attract hunters, fishermen, skiers, and campers. Wildlife in the state is abundant. It's not uncommon to see black bear, moose, Eastern coyote, and a variety of intriguing birds, including bald eagles, loons, razorbills, and puffins. The North Woods are internationally noted for excellent canoeing and fishing.

Song: State Song of Maine

Written by Roger Vinton Snow
Composed by Roger Vinton Snow

Grand State of Maine, proudly we sing
To tell your glories to the land
To shout your praises till the echoes ring
Should fate unkind send us to roam
The scent of the fragrant pines,
The tang of the salty sea will call us home.

Oh, Pine Tree State
Your woods, fields and hills
Your lakes, streams and rockbound coast
Will ever fill our hearts with thrills
And tho&apo we seek far and wide
Our search will be in vain
To find a fairer spot on earth
Than Maine! Maine! Maine!
