| Brief overview |
| Maryland has many varied things, it ranks 2nd in knowledge jobs and in the new economy index, it ranks 5th on the flip side of it, MD ranks last when it comes to safety as measured by Morgan Quinto Press, a research firm. The taxes are a bit higher and the education scores are on the lower end. The capital area in the state (so called due to its proximity to DC), most people feel, offers a better alternative to reside and avoid higher costs of staying in the DC itself. And to move around, Western Maryland is mountainous, with plenty of outdoor activities like boating and hiking. Fabulous restaurants are found in the cities of Annapolis, and Baltimore, along with good shopping and lots of entertainment. Baltimore, home of the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, ranks as the nation's second port in freight tonnage. The capital, Annapolis, is the site of the U.S. Naval Academy. Among the popular attractions in Maryland are the Fort McHenry National Monument; Harpers Ferry and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Parks; Antietam National Battlefield; National Aquarium, USS Constellation, and Maryland Science Center at Baltimore's Inner Harbor; Historic St. Mary's City; Jefferson Patterson Historical Park and Museum at St. Leonard; U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis; Goddard Space Flight Center at Greenbelt; Assateague Island National Park Seashore; Ocean City beach resort; and Catoctin Mountain, Fort Frederick, and Piscataway parks. |

| Song: Maryland, My Maryland |
Written by James Ryder Randall I His torch is at thy temple door, Avenge the patriotic gore That flecked the streets of Baltimore, And be the battle queen of yore, II My Mother State! to thee I kneel, For life or death, for woe or weal, Thy peerless chivalry reveal, And gird they beauteous limbs with steel, III Thy beaming sword shall never rust, Remember Carroll' sacred trust, Remember Howard' warlike thrust,- And all thy slumberers with the just, IV Come with thy panoplied array, With Ringgold' spirit for the fray, With Watson' blood at Monterey, With fearless Lowe and dashing May, V Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong, Come to thine own anointed throng, Stalking with Liberty along, And sing thy dauntless slogan song, VI Virginia should not call in vain, She meets her sisters on the plain- Sic semper! &apotis the proud refrain That baffles minions back amain, Arise in majesty again, VII For thou wast ever bravely meek, But lo! there surges forth a shriek, From hill to hill, from creek to creek, Potomac calls to Chesapeake, VIII Thou wilt not crook to his control, Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the shot, the blade, the bowl, Than crucifixion of the Soul, IX The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum, She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb- Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum! She breathes! She burns! She&apoll come! She&apoll come! |
