| Brief overview |
| The 14th state to join the union, Vermont has many positives barring the predominantly rural atmosphere. Morgan Quinto Press has ranked Vermont as the number two state for smartness, number 1 in safety, number 1 in health. The outcome of the Lifestyle survey supports Vermont people believe more people in Vermont are honest and trustworthy. Added to this the cost of living is slightly lesser than the national average. Good child health records, least pollution levels, AA+ rating to the state government bonds (S&P 1999) are other positives. The state is slightly warmer than the national average. One the flip side, the crime rates are marginally higher than the national average. There are more teachers per student than the national average but this does not help in obtaining more scores in the tests like SAT (both verbal and math) Be prepared to face people with little bit extra independent-mindedness, liberal on social matters, and conservative to stingy in financial affairs. Weekends you can try hiking and canoeing, or simply lounging about one of the state's bumper crop of bed and breakfasts and country inns. You can hunt and fish as well. Among the many points of interest are the Green Mountain National Forest, Bennington Battle Monument, the Calvin Coolidge Homestead at Plymouth, and the Marble Exhibit in Proctor. |
